Movie Review - Drishyam

Background

DRISHYAM - VISUALS CAN BE DECEPTIVE is a Bollywood remake of Malayalam thriller with the same name staring Mohanlal and Meena. The hindi version is directed by Nishikant Kamath. Nishikant has given hindi and marathi hits like Saatchya Aat Gharat(marathi), Dombivali Fast(marathi), Mumbai Meri Jaan(hindi), Force(hindi), Lai Bhaari(marathi).

Promos of the movie promise a taut thriller with Ajay Devgan and Tabu in the lead roles.

What Works Well?

Direction is first rate. It is a smart re-make and the proceedings keep you engaged from the word go. It is the story of a ordinary man who goes beyond his limits to protect his family. Devgan plays the ordinary common man with ease and Tabu looks convincing in her role of Inspector general of police and a worried mother. The supporting cast is effective and all the characters come to life in the critical post intervals sequences.

The real winner though is the intelligent plot and the original story by Jeethu Joseph. Very seldom do we come across such thrillers which keep the audiences hooked on till the last scene. One of the rare tales which shows a perfect crime.

What Does Not Work Well?

There are hardly any opportunities to find any mistakes. It has just two songs which are just average, but the background score is not bad. Actors in the supporting cast are not well known actors(faces) but they do they job really well. If there were few more known faces then it would have added to the publicity.

At last, this is NOT a whodunit or whodunnit movie. But it has all the ingredients that will keep you interested as the plot unfolds. It is easily one of the best thrillers that you have seen in recent years. Don't miss it.
